A Sigourney Weaver Retrospective

Sigourney Weaver's film history has been marked by daring, brilliant, and just plain hilarious moments. She is an actress who is unafraid of trying new things, of playing villains with aplomb, of looking silly, or of diving into edgy action. Her risks pay off beautifully in the form of a multi-faceted career that showcases just how versatile she truly is. In order to properly rave about every performance I'd have to keep you here for weeks. So for the purpose of keeping this retrospective somewhat contained and brief, I employed three simple rules when selecting the films and characters to highlight.

1. I had to have seen the film.
2. I had to find a single quote that gave an idea of character and didn't require supporting character quotes to explain it.
3. I had to find a photo.

(So Tadpole and Death and the Maiden, while wonderful, didn't make the list because I have no quote from either of them. Rules are rules.)

I should warn you that some of the quotes might contain spoilers if you haven't seen the film. Most won't but, for example, the quotes from Alien and The Village will. You've been warned.

Let's begin, as Julie Andrews would say, "at the very beginning".

Alien (1979) Ellen Ripley
"Final report of the commercial starship Nostromo, third officer reporting. The other members of the crew, Kane, Lambert, Parker, Brett, Ash and Captain Dallas, are dead. Cargo and ship destroyed. I should reach the frontier in about six weeks. With a little luck, the network will pick me up. This is Ripley, last survivor of the Nostromo, signing off."

Ghostbusters (1984) Dana Barrett
"Are you the Keymaster?"

Aliens (1986) Ellen Ripley
"Get away from her, you bitch!"

Gorillas in the Mist: The Story of Dian Fossey (1988) Dian Fossey
"Get off my mountain!"

Working Girl (1988) Katharine Parker
"Never burn bridges. Today's junior prick, tomorrow's senior partner."

Alien3 (1992) Ellen Ripley
"You've been in my life so long, I can't remember anything else."

Dave (1993) Ellen Mitchell
"Why couldn't you die from a stroke like everyone else?"

Copycat (1995) Helen Hudson
"I know all about you. You're just a sad, second rate, boring, impotent little copycat."

The Ice Storm (1997) Janey Carver
"Ben, you're boring me. I have a husband. I don't have a need for another one."

Snow White: A Tale of Terror (1997) Lady Claudia Hoffman
"Oh, brother, you mustn't feel bad. The blood you have shed is just the venom of a scheming child."

Alien: Resurrection (1997) Ellen Ripley
"There's a monster in your chest. These guys hijacked your ship, and they sold your cryo tube to this... human. And he put an alien inside of you. It's a really nasty one. And in a few hours it's gonna burst its way through your ribcage. And you're gonna die. Any questions?"

A Map of the World (1999) Alice Goodwin
"I am trying to have a complete nervous breakdown, and no one will let me do it in peace!"

Galaxy Quest (1999) Gwen DeMarco
"Let's get out of here before one of those things kills Guy!"

Futurama 'Love and Rocket' (2002) Planet Express Ship
"You're just jealous! Nobody loves you because you're tiny and made of meat!"

The Village (2004) Alice Hunt
"My husband, Michael, left for the supermarket at a quarter past 9 in the morning. He was found with no money and no clothes in the East River three days later."

Snow Cake (2006) Linda Freeman
"Neurotypic people are obsessed with having friends. I'm only trying to help you get some."

Vantage Point (2008) Rex Brooks
"What did he see?"
